An inherent nonlinearity in near-threshold contrast detection.

چکیده
We measured an essentially normal pedestal effect using stationary gaussian targets and slowly moving pedestal gratings. Since these conditions greatly reduce the information provided by the pedestal, we question whether uncertainty about the stimulus can be the main cause of the pedestal effect.

Design and fabrication of a high-Q near-field probe for subsurface crack detection
Non-destructive detection and evaluation of invisible cracks in metal structures is an important matter in several critical environments including ground transportation, air transportation and power plants. In this paper, a high-Q near-field Microwave probe is designed and fabricated using defected ground structures for surface and subsurface crack detection in metal structures. For this purpos...
متن کاملFuzzy gain scheduling of PID controller for stiction compensation in pneumatic control valve
Inherent nonlinearities like, deadband, stiction and hysteresis in control valves degenerate plant performance. Valve stiction standouts as a more widely recognized reason for poor execution in control loops. Measurement of valve stiction is essential to maintain scheduling. For industrial scenarios, loss of execution due to nonlinearity in control valves is an imperative issue that should be t...
متن کاملNonlinearities of near-threshold contrast transduction
The existence of analytic threshold nonlinearities was probed with 2AFC incremental threshold functions for both local and extended test patterns on stationary matched pedestals of the same and opposite sign. In contrast to the facilitation effect with same-sign pedestals, sensitivity with opposite-sign pedestals first deteriorated up to the mask detection level, abruptly improved and then dete...
متن کاملA Simple Threshold Nonlinearity for Blind Signal Separation
A computationally simple nonlinearity in the form of a threshold device is shown to serve as contrast function in blind signal separation. Convergence is shown to be robust, fast, and comparable with that of more complex polynomial nonlinearities. Together with the known signum nonlinearity for super-Gaussian distributions, which basically is a threshold device with the threshold set to zero, t...
متن کاملSpike generator limits efficiency of information transfer in a retinal ganglion cell.
The quality of the signal a retinal ganglion cell transmits to the brain is important for preception because it sets the minimum detectable stimulus. The ganglion cell converts graded potentials into a spike train with a selective filter but in the process adds noise. To explore how efficiently information is transferred to spikes, we measured contrast detection threshold and increment threshol...
